Ms. Lena Huckstep

Douglas Patterson spoke of the cafeteria cook at Calfee Training School: Ms. Huxstep. Occasionally he would work with her. He recalled her “experience and time seeing her labor in that area of preparation for the students of food, and helping in getting the food prepared, what she told us to do, then getting the food set up for the students to come by and get it, and then the times after that, the clean-up time. We would sit down with her and then we would eat lunch after everybody else ate lunch, and we took care of everything and cleaned up everything. But there were things that she showed us and taught us, and just the great respect that they did not always command, but the respect that we had for them for the type of person that they were that went beyond just being a teacher, that they were almost like part of your family.”
